Ok, ladies, I just learned how I can embrace my curls without all the frizz and the crazy. This has been tough because I did not have curly hair until after I had our preteen son, at which time, I became a hot hormonal mess, and enter Shirley Temple.
Ever since--for 13 years now--I've been trying to figure out how in the heck to deal with this situation and it's caused a lot of frustration and some tears because I've not understood how to care for my own hair, which up and drastically changed on me, while at the same time, trying hard to stay who I was before.
Why so sad? Well, curly hair gets tangled, people, and I've not known how to deal with it. I've gone to sleep with wet hair and woken up with full-on dreads that I've broken combs trying to get out whilst soaking in olive oil, losing lots of locks in the process. I've also caused a ton of damage to my hair just brushing it daily (more breakage and frizz) not ever realizing I simply can no longer brush my hair like I used to.
So, the other night, I met Rebecca Jean Bates at a BBQ hosted by our good friends, Joel and Tracey, and we got to talking about my journey of curly hair denial, and she offered to help teach me what to do with the frizzles in between my sacred blow-out appointments.
Wow. First, I've been doing it all wrong. While those million YouTube vids gave me hope, they mainly caused more confusion than anything else. But, with some hands-on instruction from this Deva-certified pro, I'm thrilled to say that my curl-management abilities have just been taken well beyond the usual desperate scrunching with conditioner.
Thank you, Rebecca and team at The Hair Parlour, for indulging all the questions + pics around all these foreign techniques and diffusing technologies. And my hair color still looks amazing, Malissa, so triple win! Maybe I'll embrace this for good. 💚
