This kid. I took him to his fav skate shop and that's when I realized how much he'd grown up. The last year was tough on him. He was working on wrapping up middle school and I was out of the country four times to be with my Dad during the end stages of his life, two trips for weeks at a time by this point in Feb, and another two long trips were to follow.
Things were definitely not as easy as usual his 8th grade year, and let's face it, middle school isn't an easy time as it is. But, he stepped up BIG TIME to help out and work independently. He pitched in, punked it out and never complained because he knew that's what it would take to keep things moving while we walked through the valley as a family that season. He knew his help was needed and he did just that. So, skate gear he got.
I think he had a gift certificate left over from Christmas that day but mom and dad gave him the green light to go way over with new decks, grip tape, the works. The kid loves building boards. He's gotten really good at it as he has with skateboarding, so moms of sons, why not support the hell out of his interests? It's worth it!
I remember thinking in this moment our son has grown into a fine young man and feeling a heaviness in my heart that he had to do it out of necessity. But, I didn't say a word, just gave him his space to do his thing knowing if I did he'd likely just shrug it off and say (as always), no mom, I'm good.
Thanks, @chancedore for being a great kid and always doing your part, especially over this last tough year. I am so stoked to be your mom. Is that ok?😭
